What is Gum Treatment (Periodontics)?

Gum disease is the most common dental problem experienced by adults. However, gum disease can occur at almost any age and its development is often slow and painless. Sometimes patients feel no symptoms until they reach a point where they risk losing their teeth. Here are some signs and symptoms of gum disease to look for:

  • Different colour of the gums

  • Reddish discoloration of the gums at the base of the teeth

  • Bloody gums when brushing or using dental floss

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Metal taste in the mouth

  • Shiny, swollen, or sore gums

  • Sensitive teeth for no apparent reason

Gum disease is one of the main causes for adults to loose their teeth. Fortunately, gum disease can usually be prevented or even reversibly treated in its early stages. That is why it is important that your dentist do a gum exam regularly.

Our dental office offers various gum treatments including deep cleaning or scaling, gum grafts and monitoring of your periodontal health.
