HISTORY OF TOOTH WHITENING

• Early 1980’s: In-office procedures were available though not commonplace
• 1990’s: In-office as well as patient-applied professionally supervised whitening was more common
• Today: In-office, home whitening, and over-the-counter (OTC) products are available
• Hydrogen peroxide has been used for over 50 years to whiten non-vital teeth HISTORY OF TOOTH WHITENING
TYPES OF STAIN COULD BE REMOVED BY WHITENING PRODUCTS:
Extrinsic stain: (what causes these types of stain?) Coffee, Tea, red wine, Tobacco, any berries with dark color like blueberry.
Intrinsic Stain: Pre and post eruptive causes
* Post-eruptive: amalgam, caries, endo (RCT).
* Pr-eruptive: tetracycline, fluorosis, dentinogenesis & amelogenesis imperfecta
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR WHITENING:

• Primary teeth (large pulp chambers)
• Newly erupted (immature enamel)
• Extensive restorations
• Caries
• Erosion
• Abrasion
• Hypersensitivity
• Renal abnormalities
Deciduous/Adult
CANDIDATES FOR WHITENING:
• Best result with shades of yellow, orange light brown
• Resistant pigmentation: shades of blue, grey, green, violet

FLUOROSIS:
Brown staining works best. Grey stains takes longer • Opaque white zones won’t react • Surrounding zones will whiten to become a more homogenous colour

NON-CANDIDATES FOR WHITENING:
•Children
• Pregnant or lactating women
• Renal deficiency
• Allergy to hydrogen peroxide
• Severe periodontal disease
• Open carious lesions
• Smokers
