Dry mouth

The medical term xerostomia is dry mouth, it occurs when you don't have enough saliva to keep your mouth moist and hydrated.

It's normal to experience dry mouth once in a while. If this feeling does not go away, you may have a problem with saliva production. Here are the symptoms of drought:

  • A sticky, dry feeling in your mouth or throat

  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, tasting or speaking

  • A burning sensation in the mouth

  • A dry and hard tongue

  • Chapped lips

  • Irritation of the gums

  • More frequent cavities

  • Mouth sores

  • Bad breath

The only method to cure dry mouth is to treat its cause. If your mouth is dry from medication, your doctor may change your prescription. If your salivary glands are not working properly, but continue to produce saliva, your doctor may prescribe treatment to help your glands work better.

If you think you have a dry mouth, see your dentist or doctor to determine the cause. Your doctor or dentist may suggest that you use artificial saliva to keep your mouth moist.
